Yerba mate
(Ilex paraguarensis) is a subtropical plant that grows in high
temperatures and high humidity. Approximately 300,000 tons of yerba
mate is produced annually in the countries
of Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. In addition to its
role in cultures of these countries, yerba mate is also used for medicinal
purposes, as a stimulant to the nervous system, and as a diuretic.
Yerba mate is also credited with
inducing mental clarity, sustaining high energy levels, boosting
the immune system, aiding weight loss and reducing blood pressure*.
