Tereré is a cold-watered infusion consumed throughout Paraguay, although people drink it in parts of Brazil as well.
In Paraguay, people will consume tereré off and on throughout the day. For more active individuals, especially for those working in crop fields beneath the hot paraguayan sun, a "tereré break" could be taken every 30-45 minutes.
Mate is a hot-water infusion of yerba mate consumed throughout Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay, as well as in some regions of Brazil and Chile. In Paraguay, mate is typically prepared in the early morning and/or late afternoon, if at all. Elsewhere, people can be found drinking mate at any time of the day since tereré is virtually unheard of outside of Paraguay.
